The 15th-ranked Sun Devil Baseball team placed a trio of players on Baseball America’s Preseason All-America Teams, including junior shortstop Deven Marrero, who is the sole unanimous selection on the first team. Junior pitcher Jake Barrett was named to the second team and junior pitcher Brady Rodgers earned third-team accolades. The Sun Devils are one of just two Pac-12 teams to place three players on the All-America teams and account for three of the seven members selected from the conference. The Sun Devils open the season by hosting a three-game series against Western Michigan from Friday, February 17h through Sunday, February 19th at Packard Stadium.
Sun Devil Softball will host its second of four tournaments starting on Friday, February 17th and wrapping up on Sunday February 19th with the Littlewood Classic at Farrington Stadium.
Sixth-year Sun Devil Head Coach Herb Sendek and Sun Devil Men’s Basketball hit the road in Pac-12 play for the final time in 2011-12 with games at Washington Thursday February 16th at 9 p.m. and Washington State on Saturday, February 18 at 6 p.m. on ROOT Sports Northwest on FOX Sports Net
Janae Fulcher and Alex Earl came off the bench to combine for 30 points to lead the Sun Devil women’s basketball to a 60-47 win over Colorado. The Sun Devils return to action next week when they play their final two home games of the 2011-12 season against Washington Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and Washington State on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Sun Devil men’s golf team fought off an injury, an illness and then darkness to finish its first day at the San Diego Intercollegiate on Monday. Freshman Mathias Schjoelberg posted a 2-over-74 and was tied for 17th after the first round but had to withdraw due to back problems in the second round. Classmate Austin Quick tied for 29th after the first round with a 3-over-75 despite battling the flu. Jin Song (tied for 56h) shot a 6-over-78, David Lowe had a 9-over-81 and Spencer Fletcher had a 10-over-82. Play for the second round was suspended due to darkness and will be completed Tuesday starting at 9:30 a.m. The final round will begin with a shotgun start immediately after.
The ninth-ranked Sun Devil women’s golf team is tied for eighth after the opening round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif., Monday. The Sun Devils shot a total of 18-over 302 for the first round of competition. The second round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge continues tomorrow at the par-72, 5,912 yard Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Sun Devil Women’s Water Polo received more good news as senior Alicia Brightwell and freshman Anna Kertes swept the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Athlete of the Week awards. The fifth-ranked squad returns to action February 24th in the UCI Tournament.
Great performances on the day marked a fitting way to celebrate senior day for Sun Devil Swimming and Diving. Despite falling to Arizona, several Sun Devils had impressive showings at the meet and helped ceremoniously send off the seniors in their final meet at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
