What Students are Saying About ASU’s Blackboard

September 3rd, 2010 · 3 Comments · Uncategorized

Now, before you say or think anything negative, don’t forget that there really are some good characteristics of blackboard. We tend to think only about the shortcomings of the system as opposed to all of the convenience it offers. Okay think about those for a second…

…Alright now it’s time to bash!!

I have used ASU’s blackboard system for my classes for four years and in my day I have had and seen some “doozies.” There are a whole slew of problems that ASU has overlooked for years now with the site. They have tried and tried to correct these problems but you’re always playing catch up when you don’t do it right the first time.

I’m not going to go into too much depth about the intricacies of why ASU has failed in their attempts to make blackboard the biggest and best. I’ve already written a number of these on a previous post where I go on some rants about it. You can read that here. I turn it into more of a joke than anything else.

Instead, I thought it would be fun to see just what people are saying about blackboard these days. I decided to scour my social media accounts to see what kind of “blackboard” comments I got in just one week. The results are listed below. I’ve also decided that this post should be dynamic and show the “real time” results for what people are currently saying about blackboard so I’ve posted a twitter widget that will feed real time results of “blackboard” comments. Enjoy!

Dear “prestigious” Blackboard 9, It would be greatly appreciated if you wouldn’t mind living up to the unrealistic expectations cooked up in each ASU students’ minds due to the rumors of your “greatness” prior to the fall semester at hand. In other words, since you probably are not smart enough to understand, please freakin work! Sarah Facebook
I love when blackboard crashes and you have two exams to take. Not once..but 5 times. Hey Michael Crow..I think your tuition increase led to a less-efficient system. Just sayin’. If it weren’t for the scholarship money, I’d be outta’ huuur. Natalie Facebook

As a whole Crow has not done much for ASU other than to drain us taxpayers out of money. Crow it seems loves to have his name in the paper. That he wildly succeeds at. Other than that, I don’t see much else other than a drain on the taxpayers and a legislature that lets him do what he wants. Odd for Republicans don’t you think?

Before coming to college, I didn’t associate a classroom environment to a computer screen and a mouse.

So starting ASU was an adjustment having to log on blackboard everyday. If my professors happened to be “on” blackboard, I was expected to use blackboard. I didn’t see any problems with blackboard other than it was slow until I noticed how sometimes blackboard never loaded or directed me to pages/sites I needed.

It got worse when I would have tests online on blackboard. Imagine your test just disappearing because blackboard froze. Now imagine explaining this to your professor who may not encounter the daily or rare roadblocks blackboard sometimes provides students with. Unless your teacher sees this frequently among other students, you may be in luck, because they’ll understand enough to let you remake it, or you could be screwed.

Blackboard and tests will always scare me; however, there is one thing I find really useful on blackboard. The communication tab. Through this tab, students have the option to send the same email to their entire class. A mass-email if you will. This comes in handy if students ever need to coordinate study groups or maybe the student missed a week and needed class notes. Etc.

Sounds easy and convenient, eh? Yes. Then I ask myself if that’s easy and convenient why can’t I just love all of blackboard? Is it because it looks too plain? Is the layout cluttered? Is it really user-friendly?

I’m pretty sure whoever made the decision here at ASU to stay with blackboard thought so. ASU has even moved to OrgSync for their student organizations.

I wonder what the biggest difference between blackboard and OrgSync is. Is there a reason why ASU doesn’t go through OrgSync for their courses?

The communication tab IS really helpful. To be honest, I have no problems with the software itself. It’s actually a really great tool and has limitless possibilities.

The only problem I have is the bandwidth it requires. For the amount of students that ASU must accommodate, I wonder if it is the best solution. Because, like you said, when the site goes down during a scheduled online test… things get hairy. I do however think that most teachers are well aware of the pains that blackboard brings as they have to work with it on a daily basis as well.

I don’t know much about OrgSync but I’m not sure it’s a system that is dynamic enough to keep up with all that ASU does with Blackboard. That’s probably the reason they are sticking with it for now.
