Summer’s in Full “Swing” and the Devils are Hot!

June 7th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Summer

June for most college students entails kicking back, enjoying the ease of having no homework, and of course the final days of the NCAA college world series. I will provide the updates for our men’s and women’s teams here in this entry, but first…

Allow me to introduce myself. As this is the first post on our new blog, I thought it would be appropriate to at least inform the readers somewhat of who is providing this nonsense. My name is Joe Mangum. I am a junior at Arizona State University majoring in Molecular Bio-Sciences and Bio-Technology (it’s a mouthful but not as fun to say as it once was for myself anyway). Admittedly, I used to be a UofA fan before coming to ASU (yeah yeah so sue me). This is mostly because in my high school days they generally showed greater dominance in track and field as well as men’s basketball of course, two of my favorite sports to watch. Needless to say, I’ve converted from my evil ways and am now a full fledged devil….hmmm oxymoronic or just ironic? It’s a good thing too I must say, especially since ASU sports has been off the charts the past year or so. I mean, we almost kicked out a nationally ranked wrestling program because it wasn’t bringing in enough revenue. Luckily that fiasco is over and the fighters are back on the mat to represent a great tradition of ASU wrestling.

Lady Devils Win Series!

The lady devils have already won the women’s college world series and are basking in the realm of their victory. Congratulations girls, you earned it! Senior Katie Burkhart and freshman Krista Donnenwirth were huge in the series. The men are on the verge of clinching a title of their own. They play Fresno State later today to kick off the three game super regional series. Side note, UofA defeated Miami in their first super regional game by belting a three run homer in the top of the 11th which lead them to a 6-3 victory (don’t kill me…I’m just reporting). If all works out well enough, we could possibly see a devils vs. cats match up in the final series. Wouldn’t that be a shame for our poor tucson folk to come all that way just to get swept by the devils…naaaaa!

Summertime
For some students, summer school is a part of ASU in June. Yeah, the hardcore future leaders of the world are hitting the books and busting out some quick credits to get ahead while us slackers are out sunbathing, cliff jumping, hiking, traveling, working, or in my case writing random blog posts about ASU and summer events. To each his own right? Before the first semester of summer school started I’d taken a few walks around campus and I’m not going to lie it seemed a little quiet and “un-ASU” like. I would go to the SRC and find only a couple of motivated daily exercisers, but that is about it. Speaking of, I have heard rumor that if you are not enrolled for summer school then your ASU ID will not enable you to use the SRC for the summer! Does anyone have an official word on this proposterousness? If it’s true then there is only one thing to do, and that is, well I haven’t thought of anything yet but I’m sure it will be something destructive.

Anyway, the days move on and, as eminem would say, the beat goes on da dum da dum! Hope all are enjoying their long summer break and if you’re doing summer school I hope you’re taking full advantage of the second to none education opportunities provided by ASU and the lovely professors/TAs (trust me there will be more to come on these guys in later posts). Till then, Beat Fresno State baby!

Hate to bust your bubble fellow devil, but it’s true on your SRC shock. You pay fees for each term you’re enrolled, so those fees that you pay for the Fall and Spring permit you to go to the SRC. If you’re not in summer classes, then you don’t pay a fee, ergo, you don’t get into the SRC as per usual. However, you can pay for summer entry, and I don’t believe the price is that bad…plus you don’t have to worry about stupid summer classes in the first place. Pretty standard at most universities…

Yeah someone said it was around $25 dollars for the summer to use the SRC services. Not too bad I guess.
